A.I.F MM to Pte 1959 D.D Grey 6th Battalion Australian Infantry

Devonshire Dickson Grey , Born Tarnagulla, Victoria, enlisted 12/01/15 . Served with the 6th AIF in Gallipoli prior to being sent to France. W.I.A gunshot to thigh 6/2/17 following discharge from hospital returned to the front , later winning the M.M , The London Gazette citation being ‘ During Operations round Glencourse Wood East Of Ypres on 20-21 September 1917 , these two stretcher bearers worked unceasing carrying the wounded to the rear passing through heavy hostile barrages. When the other bearers became casualties , these two by their own self sacrificing devotion to duty and tireless energy were instrumental in saving a number of lives’. On the latter date the Battalion were successful in capturing all of the objectives but at a terrible cost of casualties of 10 officers and 247 other Ranks killed , wounded or missing in action, 2 weeks later on 4th October Grey received a gun shot wound to the head, he survived and was returned to Australia.
