The 19th Lancers is one of the storied regiments of the Indian Army.
During the period from 1903 to 1922, the regiment saw many changes.
The 19th Lancers was formed as part of the reforms carried out by Lord Kitchener, the Commander-in-Chief of India (1899–1909).
• It was established by amalgamating two pre-existing cavalry regiments:
• 18th King George’s Own Lancers.
• 19th Lancers (Fane’s Horse).
• The amalgamated regiment retained the name “19th Lancers (Fane’s Horse).”
Uniform and Insignia:
• The regiment retained the traditions of its predecessors, including ceremonial dress and lances, typical of cavalry units of the time.
• The uniform often included khaki for active service, but ceremonial attire featured ornate elements like turbans and sashes.
Being a cavalry regiment specializing in reconnaissance, screening, and shock action.
• It was equipped with lances, sabers, and later, small arms.
It was a mixed regiment with a blend of Indian and British officers and Indian soldiers from various martial classes such as Sikhs, Rajputs, and Pathans.
• The regiment was deployed frequently along the North-West Frontier of British India (modern-day Pakistan-Afghanistan border), combating tribal uprisings and maintaining order. First World War Service:
Although the regiment itself did not deploy as a unit to the European theatre during WWI, elements of its personnel served in the Middle East, particularly in Mesopotamia (modern Iraq). After WWI, cavalry regiments like the 19th Lancers underwent mechanization and modernization. However, during 1903–1922, they still relied heavily on horses.
In 1922, as part of a major reorganization of the Indian Army, the 19th Lancers (Fane’s Horse) merged with the 18th King George’s Own Lancers to form the 19th King George’s Own Lancers.
