WW2 22nd Battalion, South Gippsland Regiment hat badge
Mint condition dark oxidised hat/cap badge worn circa 1930-42.
The Australian 22nd Battalion, often associated with the South Gippsland Regiment, was an infantry battalion of the Australian Army during World War I and later played a role in various forms during World War II .
During the interwar period, the 22nd Battalion was reorganized as part of the Militia, taking on the territorial designation of the South Gippsland Regiment. This tied the unit more directly to its recruitment area in Victoria.
World War II: As a militia unit, the 22nd Battalion was tasked primarily with home defense during the early years of World War II. It did not serve overseas in the same capacity as during World War I but contributed to Australia’s overall defense readiness. Many of its members transferred to the AIF for overseas service in units like the 2/22nd Battalion.
