The 251st Battalion was authorized on May 1, 1917, during the later stages of WWI.
primarily based in Saskatchewan, Canada, and recruited soldiers from this region.
Like many other battalions raised late in the war, it struggled with recruitment due to the depletion of available men as conscription and war-weariness impacted voluntary enlistment.
The 251st Battalion embarked for England on October 17, 1917, aboard the SS Metagama.
Once in England, it did not see direct combat as a unit. Instead, the battalion was absorbed into the 15th Reserve Battalion on October 20, 1917. Reserve battalions were responsible for providing reinforcements to other units fighting on the front lines in France and Belgium.
The 251st Battalion, like many similar units raised late in the war, contributed significantly to the Canadian Corps’ ongoing campaigns by supplying much-needed reinforcements.
Its members participated indirectly in the key battles , including the final offensives of 1918, such as the Hundred days war.
