The 103rd Mahratta Light Infantry was a regiment of the British Indian Army with a distinguished history.
Initially known as the Bombay Fencibles, it underwent several name changes before becoming the 103rd Mahratta Light Infantry in 1903 following the Kitchener reforms.
The regiment primarily recruited soldiers from the Maratha community, a warrior group native to western India,
World War I (1914–1918) – Deployed overseas, possibly in Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq) or East Africa.
After the Kitchener Reforms in 1903, the regiment was renumbered as the 103rd Mahratta Light Infantry.
In 1922, as part of the broader restructuring of the Indian Army, the regiment was merged into the 5th Mahratta Light Infantry, forming a multi-battalion regiment.
After India’s independence in 1947, the Mahratta Light Infantry became part of the Indian Army.
