The 2nd Bengal Regiment of Fusiliers, more formally known as the 2nd Bengal (European) Regiment, was a British infantry regiment that originated within the East India Company’s forces in India.
• The 2nd Bengal European Regiment was part of the Bengal Army, which was one of the three Presidency Armies (Bengal, Madras, and Bombay) maintained by the British East India Company.
• The regiment was raised from European (i.e., British or Irish) personnel — as opposed to native Indian troops (sepoys).
• The regiment would have served in various campaigns in India during the period of Company rule, which included:
• Internal conflicts like the Anglo-Mysore Wars and Anglo-Maratha Wars
• Policing and garrison duties across Bengal and other provinces
• Possibly involved in quelling uprisings or local resistance
⚔️ Indian Mutiny & Transition
During the Indian Rebellion (Mutiny) of 1857, European regiments like the 2nd Bengal Fusiliers were crucial in putting down the uprising, as many sepoy regiments had rebelled.
• After the Mutiny, the British Crown abolished the East India Company’s rule in 1858.
Transfer to the British Army
• Following the Government of India Act 1858, European regiments of the East India Company were absorbed into the British Army.
• The 2nd Bengal (European) Fusiliers became part of the regular British Army in 1861, redesignated as the 104th Regiment of Foot (Bengal Fusiliers).
• Later, under the Cardwell Reforms and Childers Reforms of the late 19th century, the 104th Foot was amalgamated into the Royal Munster Fusiliers in 1881.
