They operate similarly to local police, performing duties from FIR registration, criminal investigations, maintaining law & order, escorting VIPs, to highway patrols .
They remain the primary law enforcement in Malakand, especially in areas where regular police presence was historically absent
Over more than a century, the force has evolved from simple security duties to policing, criminal investigations, VIP escorts, and highway patrol

The Malakand Levies have been a vital, locally rooted law enforcement entity since 1895—effectively functioning as both police and paramilitary force in Malakand Division. Currently in transition towards formal integration with the provincial police, their century-long role reflects the region’s governance history and ongoing security needs.
